Colorado Lawmakers Push for Stricter Kratom Regulations

Colorado legislators are advancing a bipartisan bill to tighten regulations on kratom, an herbal substance with stimulant and sedative effects. Senate Bill 25-072, sponsored by State Senators Kyle Mullica (D) and Byron Pelton (R), would require kratom manufacturers to register annually with the state’s Department of Revenue. The proposed law aims to ensure product safety by banning synthetic and adulterated kratom, capping its intoxicating component at 2%, and mandating clear dosage and side effect labeling.
Supporters, including families affected by kratom-related deaths, see the bill as a step toward protecting public health. Critics, however, argue that the legislation could burden small businesses and restrict consumer access to natural kratom products. Despite opposition, the bill passed through the Senate Finance Committee unanimously and now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
