Colorado Lawmakers Push for Stricter Kratom Regulations

Colorado legislators are advancing Senate Bill 25-072, a bipartisan effort to regulate kratom manufacturing and sales more rigorously. The bill, sponsored by State Senators Kyle Mullica (D) and Byron Pelton (R), would require annual registration for kratom manufacturers, enforce safety testing, and mandate dosage labeling. It also seeks to ban synthetic and adulterated kratom products, which are considered more harmful than natural kratom.
Senator Mullica, an emergency room nurse, emphasized the need for regulations to address health risks such as seizures and hallucinations linked to unregulated kratom use. Meanwhile, Senator Pelton highlighted the bill’s focus on ensuring consumer access to natural kratom while curbing synthetic alternatives.
The legislation has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters praising its consumer protections and critics arguing it imposes excessive burdens on small businesses. The bill passed the Senate Finance Committee unanimously and now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
