Kratom’s Emerging Therapeutic Potential
Kratom, derived from the leaves of the Southeast Asian tree Mitragyna speciosa, is drawing attention for its potential to ease pain, lift mood, and support people managing substance use issues. In traditional settings, it has long been used by laborers for energy and endurance, often prepared as a simple tea.
Researchers highlight that kratom’s primary alkaloids, including mitragynine and small amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine in natural leaf, interact with opioid, adrenergic, and serotonergic systems in ways that may relieve pain, anxiety, and depressive symptoms while helping some patients bridge into formal treatment. Some clinicians see kratom tea as a possible harm-reduction option for people with opioid use disorder who cannot immediately access medication-assisted treatment, and scientists are exploring its components as leads for developing new, more targeted pain medications.
