Mississippi Lawmakers Debate Kratom Regulations as Session Nears End

As the legislative session winds down, Mississippi lawmakers are actively working to finalize details on bills concerning kratom regulation. Both the House and Senate have agreed to a 15% excise tax on kratom products, which will be paid by vendors and indirectly by consumers, in addition to other applicable taxes.

The Senate passed HB 1896, presented by State Senator Joey Fillingane, with an amendment addressing premium tobacco imports. Meanwhile, the House reconsidered its concurrence on HB 1077, the Kratom Consumer Protection Act, and chose to invite a conference to further discuss the bill, which seeks to establish age, potency, and store location restrictions on kratom sales. State Rep. Lee Yancey made the motion to reconsider the vote.

If enacted, HB 1077 would require kratom products to list manufacturer information and ingredients, place products behind store counters, and set the minimum age for purchase at 21. Details of the legislation are now subject to negotiation between the House and Senate.
