Toledo Bans Synthetic Kratom Products, Natural Forms Remain Legal
The Toledo City Council has voted unanimously to ban the sale of synthetic kratom products, aiming to curb sales of chemically altered variants of the Southeast Asian plant. Council member Sam Melden emphasized that the ban does not affect kratom in its natural leaf form, which remains under review.
“This is really about removing access to the synthetic derivatives that are popping up all over the city,” Melden said.
The move follows growing statewide scrutiny, with Governor Mike DeWine previously urging the Ohio Pharmacy Board to consider broader restrictions. Natural kratom, however, continues to be legally sold and is often marketed for pain, anxiety, and opioid withdrawal management.
