Chulalongkorn University Researchers Uncover Promising Benefits of Kratom

Researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand are shedding new light on the potential medicinal benefits of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), a plant with a long history in traditional medicine. Dr. Thongchai Sooksawate, a lecturer at the university’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is leading studies exploring kratom’s analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification properties.

Following the legalization of kratom in Thailand, scientists can now build upon local wisdom to investigate its healing potential. Dr. Sooksawate’s research focuses on using standardized kratom extract and its active compound, mitragynine, as natural painkillers and aids for withdrawal from narcotics like methamphetamine and morphine.

While cautioning against recreational misuse, the researchers emphasize kratom’s potential in both traditional and modern medicine. This groundbreaking work, detailed in a recent article, opens new avenues for developing natural alternatives to chemical medications and addiction treatments.
