Assembly member Proposes Kratom Regulation in California
In a move to address growing concerns over kratom safety, San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney has introduced Assembly Bill 2365, known as the Kratom Safety Act. The proposed legislation aims to regulate the sale of kratom products in California, prohibiting adulterated kratom and enforcing strict testing and registration requirements.
Kratom, a tropical tree with psychoactive compounds, has raised alarms due to potential contamination and unregulated quantities. The bill would restrict purchases to those 21 and older and mandate health warnings on labels.
While some argue for kratom’s potential benefits in pain relief and addiction treatment, policymakers emphasize the need for consumer protection. “We need to provide consumers with all the necessary information to safeguard themselves,” Haney stated.
The bill’s introduction comes as states grapple with regulating kratom in the absence of federal oversight. For more details on this developing story, visit CBS News San Francisco.
