Kratom Sellers Rally

Kratom sellers in Central Illinois are mounting a coordinated push to keep the controversial herbal product on store shelves. At a Washington City Council meeting this week, vendors warned that a prohibition could shutter businesses, with one smoke shop owner estimating kratom accounts for 40% of his sales.

Advocates argued that kratom, a Southeast Asian plant related to coffee, is used by customers managing chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression, not as a party drug. Officials are also wrestling with the rise of 7OH, a stronger synthetic variant the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is moving to pull from the market while leaving natural kratom leaf products untouched.
