Minnesota Raises Legal Age for Kratom Purchase to 21
Minnesota has joined the growing movement to regulate kratom more strictly. Governor Tim Walz recently signed legislation raising the minimum age for purchasing kratom from 18 to 21, according to Fox21 News. The new law, which takes effect August 1, 2026, specifically covers products containing mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine, the active alkaloids found in kratom.
Kratom is an herbal extract derived from the Mitragyna speciosa tree native to Southeast Asia. Violations of the age restriction carry gross misdemeanor charges. The change aligns with advocacy efforts by 7-HOPE Alliance, a consumer protection organization that supports responsible kratom regulation nationwide. Executive Director Jackie Subeck emphasizes implementing safeguards rather than prohibition to ensure responsible access to the botanical supplement.
