Oklahoma Advances Kratom Consumer Protection Legislation

In an effort to enhance consumer safety and transparency, Oklahoma lawmakers have advanced legislation targeting kratom, a herbal supplement derived from a Southeast Asian evergreen tree. The proposed laws, spearheaded by Sen. Dana Prieto and Rep. Daniel Pae, aim to tighten labeling requirements and set limits on the alkaloid content in kratom products. This move comes in response to concerns over “super-concentrated” kratom products and the mislabeling of products as all-natural. The Oklahoma Kratom Consumer Protection Act seeks to ensure products are safe for consumption by prohibiting the sale of adulterated or chemically altered kratom, which has been used as an opioid substitute. Both bills have successfully passed through their respective chambers, reflecting Oklahoma’s proactive stance on consumer health in the absence of federal regulation.
