What is kratom and what does it do?

Back in December, while driving in Sioux Falls, I noticed numerous signs outside of storefronts that said “Kratom sold here.”

Not long after, I noticed similar signs in Watertown outside of local businesses. If you have seen similar signs, you might be wondering what kratom is and whether you should be concerned?

Before I launch into the information found from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, I want to note the importance of discussing the use of any drugs (legal, illegal, supplemental) with your health care provider to ensure the health and safety of your mental and physical health and to ensure that these drugs will not interfere with any other medications or treatments you may be receiving.

What is kratom? Kratom is a tropical tree (Mitragyna speciosa) native to Southeast Asia with leaves that contain compounds that can have psychotropic (mind-altering) effects.
