Kansas City Imposes New License Rule on Kratom Retailers
Kansas City, Missouri, will now require businesses selling kratom to obtain a special Kratom Retail License before offering the product to customers, city officials announced this week. The ordinance, approved by the City Council, imposes a 500 dollar licensing fee and makes it illegal to sell or distribute kratom without the permit, with enforcement handled by the city’s Regulated Industries Division.
Mayor Quinton Lucas said the measure is intended to increase transparency. Kratom is a substance derived from a Southeast Asian plant and often marketed for pain relief or opioid withdrawal. City leaders say they will continue monitoring health data and working with regional partners as regulations evolve.
