Is Kratom helpful or hurtful? (And what even is it?)

The plant-based product is a stimulant in small doses and a sedative in large quantities. Opponents say it mimics an opioid, and six states have banned it.

CALYN THOMPSON: You may have seen signs like these around town advertising for a substance called kratom. You can buy kratom at some gas stations, tobacco stores, and even online.

LEE SALSBERRY: It’s definitely becoming more popular. I mean, there’s– I know of two places here in town that sell it.

CALYN THOMPSON: Lee Salsberry lives in Newton and has used the substance for seven years.

LEE SALSBERRY: It can help with addiction, energy, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD. The list keeps going.

CALYN THOMPSON: And yours was mostly for?

LEE SALSBERRY: For the energy.
